Very kind and understanding staff, delt with a sad time very well . Would take any animal there without hesitation.

Our vets, we love them...and so does our Barney

Unethical practice given unnecessary consultations. Let's hope animals are not suffering given these costs.

My dog (Baxter) had a couple of lumps removed two years ago which were apparently, nothing to worry about. Recently though, he had been scratching a new lump on his sternum. I grew worried the lump was growing inside and hurting him, so arranged an ultrasound at Ashfield vets in Meltham. The vet (vetinary nurse?) was a young woman (I don't know her name). After signing a consent form to allow the use of sedation if required, and leaving my dog with them, I was phoned an hour later to be asked to pick him up as he was very anxious. I was a bit surprised they hadn't sedated him but went to collect him immediately. On arriving and telling the receptionist I was there, I waited a further ten minutes listing to Baxter barking upstairs whilst the vet chatted with the receptionist in the next room. When she finally brought him downstairs, I was asked into the consultation room to get the diagnosis. It was good news and the lump was nothing to worry about, so I asked about the treatment he was currently on (anti-inflammatories for his stiff, back legs) which really wasn't helping. I was told the next step was to try steroids, however he needed a five day period free from the anti-inflammatories before the steroid treatment could begin. Ok, all good, I said, and went to collect my prescription from the receptionist. I was given two items. One was Tramadol, to help with the pain during the five days period. I asked if the other was the steroids to be told,it was codeine and paracetamol (another pain killer). Surprised they would prescribe two sets of pain-killers, I thought they must have made a mistake, so asked for the steroids instead. The receptionist told me I had to wait five days and bring him back for another consultation before giving me the steroids. After pointing out that I was perfectly able to wait five days before giving him the steroids she went in the consultation room to discuss it with the vet. After a couple of minutes the vet appeared to tell me I had to come back in five days, to assess him again before giving them to me. I explained that I could tell them five days in advance, how he would feel with no anti-inflammatories and no pain killers inside of him, and that I thought it was an unnecessary consultation. This is when things really went downhill. The vet then told me, "I shouldn't have a dog if I can't afford to treat him". This is immediately after paying 90 for an unnecessary ultrasound and another 30+ for painkillers. I protested, explaining I am not short of money but resented paying for unnecessary consultations, and was perfectly capable of waiting five days before starting his new course of treatment. To my amazement, she then played the emotional card saying, "If I cared about my dog I would make another appointment". At this point a lady arrived with her pet and I was asked by the vet to step aside while she spoke with her. I'm trying to stay calm. When the lady had finally been dealt with, the vet told me she would give me the steroids after all, but that I should look for another practice. To this, I heartily agreed, paid and left. To say this practice prays on people is an understatement. They use emotional blackmail to force money out of you. Most customers would probably not complain and I feel for them. Having a pet is already an expensive business especially when they get old. When I got home I found that the vet had cut Baxter's belly quite badly when shearing him in prep for the ultrasound. I realise the Meltham branch is a satellite from the main practice in Halifax, but it is staffed by undertrained, incompetent and rude practitioners. I will never use them again and don't recommend anyone else use them either. A truly disgusting experience. I wish I could leave no stars.

Friendly vets. Easy to get appointments. Always had the best care from them.
